You’ve got your WBGT device, your policy printed and laminated, and you’ve just pulled the team off the field twenty minutes early because the wet bulb hit 90.2. And now a coach — or worse, a parent on the sideline — is giving you the look. The one that says back in my day, we didn’t need a machine to tell us when to practice.
Comment 1 ”These modifications are making the kids soft.”
To a parent, first time hearing it: I get why it feels that way, but this isn’t about toughness — it’s about physiology. A 15-year-old’s body can’t regulate heat as efficiently as an adult’s yet. We’re not lowering the bar, we’re keeping them in the game long enough to actually compete.
To a coach you have a good relationship with: Soft is not what’s happening on that whiteboard when a kid goes down and we’re doing compressions instead of running the next drill. I’d rather you be annoyed at me for twenty minutes than dealing with that.”
The one you say in the group chat after: Funny how it’s the guy standing in the shade with a visor and a water bottle calling it soft.
Comment 2 ”We didn’t have this stuff growing up and we turned out fine.”
Educational: A lot of people didn’t, and some people didn’t turn out fine. Exertional heat stroke is 100% survivable when it’s caught and treated within about 30 minutes, but that only works if we’re not waiting until someone’s already down. The modifications are how we make sure we never have to test that.”
Diplomatic: Totally fair, and I know it can feel like overkill. Think of it less like a rule and more like a seatbelt — you don’t need it until the one day you really do.”
Sarcastic (save for the ride home): We also didn’t have concussion protocols, and look how that turned out for a lot of guys.
Comment 3 ”Why does the AT get final say over the coach on this?”
Educational: It’s not a turf thing, it’s liability and licensure. Heat modification policy is a medical decision, and by state practice act, that call sits with the credentialed medical provider on site. If something happens and the policy wasn’t followed, that’s not just on me, it’s on the program.
Diplomatic: Think of it like the ref making the call — you run the offense, I run risk. We’re both trying to get the same team to Friday in one piece.
Sarcastic: Because ‘let’s find out’ is not a risk management strategy.
Comment 4 ”Can we at least start earlier so we get more time before you shut it down?”
Educational: Yes, actually — this one I’ll always say yes to. WBGT is lowest in the early morning before the sun and humidity peak. Moving practice to 6am instead of 3pm can buy you more time on the field.
Diplomatic: Yes, let’s build the schedule around the heat instead of fighting it. I’d rather help you find the window than keep pulling you out of one.
Sarcastic: No sarcasm needed here — this is a question that deserves a straight “yes, let’s do it.”
When you don’t have time for any of the above, this is the one worth keeping in your back pocket:
“I’m not trying to slow the season down. I’m trying to make sure everyone’s here for all of it.”
It’s not clever, but it reframes the conversation away from toughness and back to the goal you and the coach actually share.
