About the Team
Go4 is a sports safety and intelligence platform. We place credentialed Athletic Trainers at events and venues. Every shift produces structured data: a verified credential check, a venue-specific emergency action plan, and a clinical record filed on site. More than 26,000 Athletic Trainers work through Go4, serving more than 5,000 schools, colleges, leagues, and facilities across all 50 states. We work remotely and bring the whole company together in person four times a year.
The coverage is the service and the record is the asset. Go4 is becoming the authoritative record of who provided medical coverage, where, and to what standard. That record is the data layer that makes credentialing, governance, and insurance underwriting possible at scale.
We are building our first internal product and engineering organization to deliver V2 of the Go4 platform. V2 is not a rewrite of a side project. It is the evolution of a live, revenue-generating platform into a modern suite of applications, services, and data.
About the Role
We are looking for the senior systems and backend engineering leader for Go4’s new internal technical organization. You will own the architectural direction of our backend, API, cloud infrastructure, and platform systems, and you will keep writing code while you do it.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. We are not looking for someone whose experience is limited to managing engineers or administering infrastructure that other people built. We are looking for someone who has personally designed, built, migrated, and operated production systems, and who can set the standards of a growing engineering organization while still contributing directly to architecture and implementation.
You will join a team in motion. We are stabilizing the Rails and PostgreSQL platform while moving toward a hybrid architecture that adds Node.js and TypeScript services, Kubernetes, modern API patterns, real observability, purpose-built operational data stores, and an increasingly serious analytical data layer.
You would join Go4’s first internal product and engineering cohort alongside the Senior Solutions Engineer, the Lead Application Engineer, the Product Manager, and the Product Analyst, under our Head of Technology. The four of you arrive together, evaluate the platform vision, and set the standards everyone after you inherits.
In this role, you will:
- Own the architectural direction of Go4’s backend, API, cloud infrastructure, and platform systems.
- Design the V2 API and service architecture supporting the Athletic Trainer and Event Organizer experiences across web and mobile, and define the contracts that let application and backend engineering work at the same time rather than in sequence.
- Lead the evolution of the existing Rails and PostgreSQL transactional platform, introducing new services where they create clear architectural or product value rather than where they are interesting.
- Establish engineering standards, development workflows, documentation practices, code review expectations, CI/CD patterns, and production operating practices.
- Lead the evolution of our containerized workloads to orchestration on Kubernetes and EKS, built as repeatable infrastructure as code with Terraform.
- Establish production-grade logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting, so that both infrastructure health and business transactions are visible.
- Guide the use of PostgreSQL and Aurora, Redis and ElastiCache, document stores, time series systems, and object storage, and establish the operational data flows that will feed the analytical layer.
- Maintain appropriate security architecture around PHI, PII, payments, credentials, and other sensitive platform data.
- Help select, onboard, and mentor the backend, application, and data engineers who come next.
- Write code directly whenever that is the fastest or best way to move the platform forward.
What the first year looks like:
We have already written the scorecard you would be reviewed against. It has four objectives, and they carry from this description into your 2027 performance review unchanged.
- V2 architecture defined and building. The backend, API, infrastructure, and service architecture are settled, and application and backend engineering are working in parallel against stable contracts.
- An engineering operating model that scales past the founding team. Standards, review, CI/CD, and documentation exist and are followed.
- V2 in production, with reliability and observability to match. The platform moves from implementation through integration, hardening, and rollout.
- The next engineering cohort recruited and developing. The team grows without the standards slipping.
You might thrive in this role if you:
- Have 7 to 12 or more years of software, backend, platform, or infrastructure engineering experience, and have progressively taken responsibility for larger parts of a production system.
- Have personally designed, built, and operated cloud native production systems, including the peripherals of telemetry, observability, and analytics.
- Know Kubernetes, containerized applications, and infrastructure as code well enough to make meaningful implementation decisions, not just follow a tutorial.
- Are strong in both RESTful API design as well as event-driven architectures, and have designed contracts that other teams built against.
- Have worked with slim application backends such as Node.js, Go, or Python built under microservice principals.
- Has experience interacting with data patterns across relational (SQL, pgSQL), object-model (Mongo, DocumentDB), timeseries (Flux, TigerDB), and key-value (Redic, Elaticache) data sources and understand the differences.
- Have built real observability with structured logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting, and have run incident response on systems that mattered.
- Write things down. Architecture that exists only in one person’s head is a risk to the business and we treat it that way.
- Use AI in your current work and can describe how the changes in available tooling has impacted specific workflows, solution design principals, and approach to consumer software. We currently run on Claude, and are continuously adapting our workflows to empower a small team to cover this scope by way of that leverage.
- Have Ruby on Rails experience, which is genuinely valuable here because V2 evolves alongside the existing platform rather than replacing it overnight.
Also valuable:
- Experience modernizing legacy systems. Could be migrating monolithic applications to microservices, breaking up singular data stores to distributed data layers to increase performance, or simply retrofitting a legacy codebase for modern stack compatibility.
- Experience with HIPAA, PHI and PII, SOC 2, payments, or other regulated data environments.
- Experience at a growth-stage SaaS, marketplace, healthtech, fintech, workforce, logistics, or insurtech company.
- Experience recruiting and developing an engineering team from a standing start.
About Go4
Go4’s purpose is to become the record of who provided medical coverage, where, and to what standard. Every athlete deserves a credentialed professional on site, and every organization deserves proof that one was there.

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, veteran status, disability, genetic information, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. Background checks for applicants will be administered in accordance with applicable law, and qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered for employment consistent with those laws.

Compensation
$165K to $195K plus equity
The base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition to the salary range listed above, total compensation includes a meaningful equity grant, an annual performance bonus, and the following benefits.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family, with Go4 contributing 50% of premium cost.
- 401(k) retirement plan.
- Flexible, uncapped paid time off, plus ten paid company holidays.
- Fully remote, anywhere in the U.S., with core collaboration hours of 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM ET, and four company gatherings a year.
We are building our first internal product and engineering organization, and we view this team differently from hires joining an established department. We structure compensation to give early team members real participation in the long-term value they help create, and we expect the responsibilities and leadership opportunities in this role to expand as the platform and the organization do.
More details about our benefits are available to candidates during the hiring process. This role is at-will and Go4 reserves the right to modify base pay and other compensation components at any time based on individual performance, team or company results, or market conditions.
How to Apply
Complete the application form below.
Our process is four conversations. You will have a 30-minute screen with our CEO, a 90-minute technical conversation with our Head of Technology, an hour with the product and engineering cohort you would work alongside, and a final hour with our CEO and COO together.
As part of the hiring process, there will be a short take-home exercise after the Technical conversation with our Head of Technology, which we’ll review in the next conversation.
